Tonight I went to see Jimmy Needham perform at Watermark Community Church. Watermark seems like a really neat, huge, trendy, outreach-focused, young people out the wazoo church…but not going to lie, I just went there to see Jimmy. The $5 ticket price was worth every penny.
I think Jimmy Needham is a great songwriter, and he is just as good live as on the CD. But, he is a guy completely sold out to glorify God. The eleven-or-so DTS seminary students left all saying “man, that was convicting.” One thing he mentions is how at one point in his life he was a really zealous person. He would talk to anyone he could about Christ, do all the church stuff and come back thinking “hey, I did good today!”. But, he gradually learned that you can’t give what you don’t have. He knew all the right things to say, but he didn’t love Christ. He didn’t spend time in the Word and had no love behind it. So, God broke him. His new song Hurricane is about that (http://www.myspace.com/jimmyneedham -> Hurricane). He put his tracks on hold and just disappeared from everything until he could be overwhelmed with the hope and love he knew was lost. Now he is able to share that love because he knows it.
Cool testimonies. Good lyrics. I recommend buying the CDs.
p.s. his wife used to be his tour bus driver, and she plays the violin on the tracks.
